How to Evaluate Startup Software Deals

A practical checklist for comparing startup software discounts, eligibility, renewal costs and application requirements.

Start with the problem, not the discount

Write down the task the software needs to solve, the people who will use it and the integrations you cannot replace. A large discount is not a saving if it adds another tool your team must maintain. Compare your current setup with the proposed tool before applying.

Separate directory access from provider eligibility

Being able to browse an offer does not mean you qualify for it. Check the provider's company-age, funding, location, accelerator and new-customer requirements. A FounderSave membership does not override those requirements or guarantee approval. Read the current provider terms rather than relying only on a listing headline.

Compare the same usage and time period

Estimate seats, monthly usage, required add-ons and onboarding costs for each option. Compare the total over the same period, including what you expect to pay after the promotion ends. A percentage reduction and a fixed credit balance are different benefits; compare the actual charges your expected usage would create.

Check how the offer is redeemed

Confirm whether you need an application, a specific signup link or a code before opening an account. Ask whether an existing account can qualify and whether payment details are required. Do not assume that an offer can be applied retroactively. Keep the provider's written approval and terms for your records.

Plan for renewal and an exit

Check the renewal price, cancellation deadline, export format and migration effort. Assign someone to review the service before the benefit ends. If the undiscounted price would be unaffordable, prepare a smaller configuration or an alternative before moving essential workflows.

Compare current productivity offers. Provider terms and approval always apply.
